Truyện Kiều – The Tale of Kieu (Verses 985-1020)

Truyện Kiều (Câu 985-1020)

Nguyễn Du

985.

990.
Mụ thì cầm cập mặt nhìn, hồn bay.
Vực nàng vào chốn hiên tây,
Cắt người coi sóc rước thầy thuốc men.
Nào hay chưa hết trần duyên,
Trong mê dường đã đứng bên một nàng;

995.

Lựa lời khuyên giải mơn man gỡ dần:

1005.
“Một người dễ có mấy thân,
Hoa xuân đương nhị, ngày xuân còn dài
Cũng là lỡ một lầm hai,
Đá vàng sao nỡ ép nài mưa mây
Lỡ chân trót đã vào đây,

1010.

The Tale of Kieu (Verses 985-1020)

Author: Nguyễn Du
Translation: Đặng Hoàng Lan

985. An inevitable end for a soul as tortured as she was in this life,
To swiftly depart this world with such a final and dramatic stab.
The story of injustice suffered by her was spread far and wide.
This caused curiosity and people flocked in and jammed the house
As Kieu lie ever so still, seeming more dead than dead.

990. Overwhelmed by the scene, Dame Tu trembled with fear and panic.
She hastily had Kieu moved to the back of the house,
Then ordered the medicine man and his helper to attend to her.
Is it possible that Kieu’s karma in the world had ended?
Tho she was unconscious, Kieu sensed a girl standing by her side.

995. In secrecy the girl communicated with her, “Your fate yet awaits.
How can one escape from paying the debts of their life?
At present, you must bear your failing as peach-red cheeks.
You wish to leave this world, but heaven will not grant you entry.
You are required to live and follow your destiny, Kieu, frail reed.

1000. You can trust that I will meet you, at Tien Đuong river, someday.”
Following a day and a harrowing night of care and medicines,
Kiều slowly became aware of the sounds in the house, she knew
By her heavy heart whose house it was as Dame Tu loomed over her.
The Madam spoke in a gentle manner, as if to comfort her,

1005. “You know, each person has only one body,
You are like a flower in bloom, your spring but at its start.
It appears I may have committed a grave error, but now
I speak as true as a golden arrow, you needn’t be whored.
By this experience your mind has surely been made ready,

1010. I will simply lock you in your room to await a suitable man.
As long as you are still alive, you still can yield me dividends.
Carefully, I will find a spouse for you from a wealthy family.
Why risk death only to cause us to seek revenge on each other?
You must know if you wound yourself, you surely ruin me, as well.”

1015. Dame Tu’s whispered words of greed and pleading fell on her ears,
And Kieu realized she could suddenly, easily, discern good from evil.
She recalled the wisdom of her dream-like state,
She remembered that she knows each person’s fate is predestined.
If one doesn’t pay off the debts of this life,
