Biết bao duyên nợ thề bồi.
Kiếp này thôi thế thì thôi còn gì.
Tái sinh chưa dứt hương thề.
Làm thân trâu ngựa đền nghì trúc mai.
Nợ tình chưa trả cho ai,

Khối tình mang xuống tuyền đài chưa tan.
Nỗi riêng riêng những bàn hoàn,
Dầu chong trắng đĩa, lệ tràn thấm khăn.
Thúy Vân chợt tỉnh giấc xuân,
Dưới đèn ghé đến ân cần hỏi han:

“Cơ trời dâu bể đa đoan,
Một nhà để chị riêng oan một mình.
Cớ chi ngồi nhẫn tàn canh?
Nỗi riêng còn mắc mối tình chi đây?
Rằng: “Lòng đương thổn thức đầy,

Tơ duyên còn vướng mối này chưa xong.
Hở môi ra cũng thẹn thùng,
Để lòng thì phụ tấm lòng với ai.
Cậy em, em có chịu lời,
Ngồi lên cho chị lạy rồi sẽ thưa.

725.
Giữa đường đứt gánh tương tư,
Loan giao chắp mối tơ thừa mặc em.
Kể từ khi gặp chàng Kim,
Khi ngày quạt ước, khi đêm chén thề.
Sự đâu sóng gió bất kỳ,

730.
Hiếu tình khôn lẽ hai bề vẹn hai!
Ngày xuân em hãy còn dài,
Xót tình máu mủ, thay lời nước non.
Chị dù thịt nát xương mòn,
Ngậm cười chín suối hãy còn thơm lây.

735.
Chiếc vành với bức tờ mây,
Duyên này thì giữ vật này của chung.
Dù em nên vợ nên chồng,
Xót người mệnh bạc, ắt lòng chẳng quên.
Mất người còn chút của tin,

We have sworn so many marriage vows together.
This is simply what life is like and it can’t be helped.
My vow will never alter, in this life or the next.
I will be the buffalo or the horse to exhibit my gratitude
And if by this my debt of devotion has not been yet paid

710. Still my love will abide, not even extinguished in a fiery hell.”
Kieu wallowed in her feelings of dread and mourning.
The oil of the lamp diminished and tears drenched her bedclothes.
Van was awakened by her sister’s weeping.
She stepped into the lamplight and expressed grave concern.

715.
“God often gives us challenges,
You should not practice such injustice toward yourself!
Why do you stay up so late at night?
Are you keeping some secret from me?”
Kieu answered, “My heart is sobbing,

720.
I am in grief because I have forsaken a love.
I feel such shame to tell you the whole truth,
But if I keep it to myself, it betrays him and the purity of love.
I wonder if you can bear with me the sorrow of this tale?
Sit with me and consider the weight I ask you to share.

725.
Because my love is unfulfilled, arrested by tragedy,
I beg you to stand in place of me, to restore what remains!
From the day I have met the young Kim,
We have nights and days of promises made and eventually, vows,
But our family’s troubles were sudden, a ruinous storm!

730.
How can I fulfill my pledge to both love and filial duty?
Your time of youth will still last long, can you find pity for me,
Your only blood sister and help me to redeem my pledge to Kim?
If my bones be broken and my flesh torn, no matter my fate,
I will breathe into your happiness and smile on you.

735.
Here are the bracelets and our written vows for marriage.
Please marry him and keep these as a remembrance.
Though later he will be husband, and you his wife,
Filled with pity for a cruel fate, you will certainly not forget me.
I will be gone, but you will hold my most precious possessions.
