635.
Ngại ngùng giợn gió e sương,
Ngẩng hoa bóng thẹn, trông gương mặt dày.
Mối càng vén tóc bắt tay,
Nét buồn như cúc, điệu gầy như mai.
Đắn đo cân sắc cân tài,

640.
Ép cung cầm nguyệt, thử bài quạt thơ.
Mặn nồng một vẻ một ưa,
Bằng lòng khách mới tùy cơ dặt dìu.
Rằng: Mua ngọc đến Lam Kiều,
Sính nghi xin dạy bao nhiêu cho tường?

645.
Mối rằng: đáng giá nghìn vàng,
Rớp nhà nhờ lượng người thương dám nài.
Cò kè bớt một thêm hai,
Giờ lâu ngã giá vàng ngoài bốn trăm.
Một lời thuyền đã êm dằm.

650.
Hãy đưa canh thiếp trước cầm làm ghi.
Định ngày nạp thái vu qui,
Tiền lưng đã sẵn việc gì chẳng xong!
Một lời cậy với Chung công,
Khất từ tạm lĩnh Vương ông về nhà.

655.
Thương tình con trẻ cha già,
Nhìn nàng ông những máu sa ruột dầu.
Nuôi con những ước về sau,
Trao tơ phải lứa, gieo cầu đáng nơi.
Trời làm chi cực bấy trời,

660.
Này ai vu thác cho người hợp tan!
Búa rìu bao quản thân tàn,
Nỡ đầy đọa trẻ, càng oan khốc già.
Một lần sau trước cũng là,
Thôi thì mặt khuất chẳng thà lòng đau!

665.
Theo lời như chảy dòng châu,
Liều mình, ông rắp gieo đầu tường vôi.
Vội vàng kẻ giữ người coi,
Nhỏ to nàng lại tìm lời khuyên can:
“Vẻ chi một mảnh hồng nhan,

While deadened to the cold of the wind and fog,
She was ashamed to look at the flowers or her face in the mirror.
Kindly, the broker smoothed her hair and caressed her hand.
She trembled and remained as sad as a chrysanthemum.
The suitor gazed upon her beauty and took note of her grace.

640.
Sinh asked her to play the moon lute and compose verses on the fan.
He admired her skills, her poise and dignity.
Satisfied, the suitor was ready to haggle for her hand.
He said “I have come to the Lam Bridge for this jade,
What is the price of the wedding gift?”

645. The broker said “She is worth thousands in gold,
But the situation is dire and they must rely upon your big heart.”
He proceeded to drive a hard bargain that benefited only himself.
The price he gave her was four hundred silver liangs.
The boat rowed smoothly then, though their trade was unjust.

650. Sinh asked Kieu to give him her horoscopes.
He set a date for the offerings and the wedding.
Money in hand, the family troubles were easily solved.
Kieu’s family relied on Old Chung for help,
To guarantee that Old Vuong would be released on bail.

655. Distressed by a deep pity for her youth lost to this elderly suitor,
Old Vuong was consumed with grief.
“When I raised my daughter, I wished her to find
A worthy mate from which to accept a marriage proposal.
Oh God! Why do you impose such a tragedy upon us?

660.
Who slandered us so as to shatter our family!?
This old body has no concern of being killed,
But the more my child hurts, the more severe is my pain.
Death happens only once, sooner or later, to all persons.
I would rather die than suffer this.”

665.
After saying those words, he shed more tears.
He desperately rammed his head against the wall.
Family members rushed in to keep him calm.
Kieu whispered to him, beseeching him,
“Is a beautiful girl even worthy of notice?
