Truyện Kiều (Câu 215-250)

Nguyễn Du

215.
Trông theo nào thấy đâu nào.
Hương thừa dường hãy ra vào đâu đây.
Một mình lưỡng lự canh chầy,
Đường xa nghĩ nỗi sau này mà kinh.
Hoa trôi bèo dạt đã đành,

220.
Biết duyên mình, biết phận mình thế thôi!
Nỗi riêng lớp lớp sóng dồi,
Nghĩ đòi cơn lại sụt sùi đòi cơn.
Giọng Kiều rền rĩ trướng loan,
Nhà huyên chợt tỉnh hỏi can cớ gì?

225.
Cớ sao trằn trọc canh khuya,
Màu hoa lê hãy dầm dề giọt mưa?
Thưa rằng: “Chút phận ngây thơ,
Dưỡng sinh đôi nợ tóc tơ chưa đền.
Buổi ngày chơi mả đạm Tiên,

230.
Nhắp đi thoắt thấy ứng liền chiêm bao.
Đoạn trường là số thế nào,
Bài ra thế ấy, vịnh vào thế kia.
Cứ trong mộng triệu mà suy,
Phận con thôi có ra gì mai sau!”

235.
Dạy rằng: “Mộng triệu cớ đâu,
Bỗng không mua não chuốc sầu nghĩ nao.”
Vâng lời khuyên giải thấp cao,
Chưa xong điều nghĩ đã dào mạch Tương.

Hiên tà gác bóng chênh chênh,
Nỗi riêng, riêng trạnh tấc riêng một mình.
Cho hay là thói hữu tình,
Đố ai gỡ mối tơ mành cho xong.

The Tale of Kieu (verses 215-250)

215.
She looked around but she could not see anyone.
Still she could feel the lingering perfume in the air.
All alone tossing and turning all night long,
She was afraid to think about her distant future.
Like floating duckweed and drifting flowers,

220.
She realized what her fate would be.
Like waves crashing onto the beach, her innermost feelings tortured her.
Every time she thought about her future, tears welled up in her eyes.
Kieu’s sobs could be heard through the curtain.
Her mother suddenly woke up and asked: “What’s the matter?”

225.
Why are you awake in the dead of night,
With your lovely face bathed in tears?”
Kieu said: “Mother, as your young daughter,
I have not reciprocated any of your favors.
This afternoon we visited Dam Tien’s grave,

230.
Then tonight I suddenly saw her in my dream.
What is the Book of Doom, Mother?
She gave me some themes from which I wrote poems.
According to what I saw in my dream, I can foretell,
My life will not have a happy ending.”

235.
Her mother said: “Those are silly dreams, my child,
You are inviting trouble.”
Kieu listened to the sensible advice from her mother.
Her tears rained down because her thoughts were so unclear.
Outside the window, orioles were lightly chirping.

240.
Willow blooms blew over the neighbor’s wall.
The moon cast its slanted shadow on the veranda.
In solitude with her innermost thoughts, she felt very lonely.
Everyone knows that for those who are sentimental,
It can be a challenge to escape from love’s fragile web.

245.
Since the young Kim had returned to his study,
He had fallen into a perpetual state of wistful longing for Kieu.
As soon as he had emptied his cup of gloom, it was filled anew.
Just one day without her seemed to last three autumns.
Silk curtains veiled her windows like dense clouds.
