Xác người nằm trôi sông, phơi trên ruộng đồng
Trên nóc nhà thành phố, trên những đường quanh co
Xác người nằm bơ vơ, dưới mái hiên chùa
Trong giáo đường thành phố, trên thềm nhà hoang vu

Mùa xuân ơi, xác nuôi thơm cho đất ruộng cày
Việt Nam ơi, xác thêm hơi cho đất ngày mai
Đường đi tới, dù chông gai
Thì quanh đây đã có người

Xác người nằm quanh đây, trong mưa lạnh này .
Bên xác người già yếu, có xác còn thơ ngây
Xác nào là em tôi, dưới hố hầm này
Trong những vùng lửa cháy, bên những vồng ngô khoai

Xác người nằm bên nhau treo trên gầm cầu
Trong góc nhà đổ nát dưới những hào thông sâu
Xác người còn xương khô trong khắp bụi bờ
Sau những hè phố vắng trên dốc đường mấp mô

Ngày mai đây xác lên cây trên khắp ruộng này
Ngày mai đây xác reo vui những khóm mạ tươI
Đồng lúa mới người ra đI
Dựng tương lai với tay đầy.

Song For The Dead

The Dead lie floating in the river and exposed in the field,
On urban rooftops and along winding roads.
The Dead lie solitary under the eaves of pagodas,
In local churches and in doorways of abandoned houses.

Oh, Spring! The Dead nourish the fertile soil for growing crops.
Oh, Vietnam! The Dead breathe life into the soil of tomorrow.
Even though the road ahead is laden with pitfalls,
There are many impassioned citizens out there.

The Dead lie strewn about in the cold rain.
Among the bodies of the old lie the corpses of the young.
Which body lying in the bomb shelter is my brother’s,
Among the ashes and amidst the rows of corn?

The Dead hang in clusters from the bridges,
From the corners of destroyed houses and beneath deep trenches.
The dry bones of the Dead lie scattered in the bushes,
Along deserted streets and on steep rough roads.

Tomorrow the Dead will spring up as trees in the fields.
Tomorrow the Dead will rejoice as young rice seeds.
The Living will go into the new rice fields,
And build a future with strong ardent hands.
