Về trong phố xưa tôi nằm

The Call of Eternity

Returning to the old town where I lie down,

I can hear someone singing me a lullaby beside a garden.

Suddenly it’s like my body no longer exists,

And I am surrounded by wild and distant fields.

Meandering down the highland road where I always sit,

I can hear chickens clucking hoarsely from beyond the hills.

Suddenly all the streets become deserted.

I am the lone soul forever wandering.

At times my heart appears to be empty.

There are times of laughter and times of loneliness.

So many nights I long to return to a faraway street.

So many nights I yearn to sit peacefully on my mother’s roof.

The river to which I am running,

Has become suddenly and unexpectedly dry.

There are times when my heart knows not what it wants.

I believe I am the wind.

Returning to the foot of the mountain to visit the grave,

At midday I am tired after only walking halfway.

All at once I know that eternity is,

A road that will never end.
